Responses of Participants During an Immersive Virtual Environment Experience

چکیده
—This paper reports on the results of an experiment designed to study fine grain physiological responses of participants to an immersive virtual simulation of an urban environment. An experiment was carried out with 40 participants who were asked to walk through a virtual street, which had virtual characters walking through it. The analysis of differences in participant responses at various stages of the experiment (baseline recordings, training, first half and second half of the urban simulation) is examined in detail. It was found that participants typically show a stress response during the training phase and a stress response towards the end of the simulation of the urban experience. The impact of realism on the reported presence was evaluated. The results suggest that the lowest presence was achieved with the higher fidelity characters but the less varied textures. There is some evidence also that variations in the level of visual realism based the texture strategy used was associated with changes in mental stress.

Temporal and Spatial Variations in Presence: Qualitative Analysis of Interviews from an Experiment on Breaks in Presence
This paper presents qualitative findings from an experiment designed to investigate breaks in presence. Participants spent approximately five minutes in an immersive Cave-like system depicting a virtual bar with five virtual characters. On four occasions the projections were made to go white to trigger clearly identifiable anomalies in the audiovisual experience. Participants’ physiological res...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Sense of Presence of Traditional Virtual Reality and Immersive Environments
User experience is a critical component in the development of virtual environment systems and applications. To create an effective and efficient user experience for virtual environment systems, it is imperative to conduct empirical studies to explore factors that contribute to a heightened sense of presence, or immersion, for users, who increasingly demand an experience in a virtual environment...
متن کاملAn Augmented Reality System for the Treatment of Acrophobia: The Sense of Presence Using Immersive Photography
This paper describes an Augmented Reality (AR) system for the treatment of acrophobia. First, the technical characteristics of the first prototype are described. Second, the capacity of the immersive photography used in the AR system to provoke sense of presence in users is tested. Forty-one participants without fear of heights, walked around a staircase in both a real environment and an immers...
متن کاملAn Eye Gaze Model for Dyadic Interaction in an Immersive Virtual Environment: Practice and Experience
This paper describes a behavioural model used to simulate realistic eye-gaze behaviour and body animations for avatars representing participants in a shared immersive virtual environment (IVE). The model was used in a study designed to explore the impact of avatar realism on the perceived quality of communication within a negotiation scenario. Our eye-gaze model was based on data and studies ca...
متن کاملHow we experience immersive virtual environments: the concept of presence and its measurement
This paper reviews the concept of presence in immersive virtual environments, the sense of being there signalled by people acting and responding realistically to virtual situations and events. We argue that presence is a unique phenomenon that must be distinguished from the degree of engagement, involvement in the portrayed environment. We argue that there are three necessary conditions for pre...
